Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs visits TJES
Assistant Secretary of Indian Affairs Larry Echo Hawk read the book “Call Me Little Echo Hawk” written by his wife Terry Echo Hawk, to youngsters at TJES. The reading was one part of a day-long visit by Echo Hawk September 8 to the campus of United Tribes Technical College. The assistant secretary also toured the elementary school, met with administrators and teachers, and joined TJES students to watch a televised speech about education by President Barack Obama. North Dakota State Assessment
TJES grades 3-8 will be taking the North Dakota State Assessment (NDSA) October 26 through November 13. All public elementary and secondary schools, along with all BIA schools are required to participate.
The students are evaluated against the previous year’s standards. For example, a student in grade 6 in the fall 2009 will be assessed on grade 5 standards.
The NDSA is a primary indicator for measuring a school’s Adequately Yearly Progress (AYP) in Reading and Mathematics.
On October 23, TJES will be having a State Testing Pep Rally for students in grades 3-8. Parents are encouraged to support your child by attending. More information will be sent home with students.
Test Taking Tips for Parents:
- Contact TJES Reading (Brenda Jechort) and Math (Misty Miller) coaches for ideas to help prepare your child before state testing: 701-255-3285 x 1289.
- Talk to your child’s teacher often to find out what activities at home may help your child’s performance on the test.
- Make sure your child gets enough sleep the night before the test
- Make sure that your child gets up early enough so that he/she will be on time to school. Do not plan any doctor or dental appointments on test dates.
- Eat a healthy breakfast the morning of the test.
- Encourage your child to do his/her best.
Zulu dancers at TJES

On September 10 a group of Zulu dancers from South Africa entertained the students and staff of TJES. They kept the show interesting by always being active. The students never got bored. Students volunteered to dance and play their drums with them. The dancers were very talented; they had wonderful voices. They jumped in the air and used the whole gym by running and playing the drums energetically.
Books donated by Kiwanis Club
Bill and Dixie Lardy of Bismarck made a delivery of books on August 25 to the TJES library. First graders Shon Laducer Blue and Wakinyan Afraid of Hawk look at one of the 30 titles included. The Lardys made the donation from books collected at a district convention in Watertown, SD of Kiwanis Club members in the Dakotas and Minnesota. United Tribes News photo Dennis J. Neumann.
