Powwow Youth Day is Friday, September 916 August 2005
BISMARCK (UTN) - Teachers and advisers are urged to register their school and youth groups in advance for Youth Day at the United Tribes International Powwow. The music and culture event for young people is set for Friday morning, September 9 on the college campus in Bismarck.
"Youth Day is geared toward young people and visitors interested in Native American contemporary and traditional performing arts," said Julie Cain, Youth Day coordinator. "It seems to be more popular every year."
Traditional Lakota stories will be among the presentations, along with a demonstration of traditional games, hoop dancing and several musical performances, including songs from Miss Indian Nations and the special cultural performers, the Atka Dancers from Atka, Alaska.
The Cannonball Singers, a drum group from Cannonball, ND, will provide opening and closing songs and accompanying music for performers.
About two thousand young people are expected to attend from Bismarck-Mandan, surrounding towns and outlying reservation communities as part of organized outings. The schedule begins with a prayer and flag song at 9 a.m. and runs through the morning. There is no admission fee for those who schedule in advance. Support for the event is made possible by the Bismarck Public Schools.
Young people are invited to view the 1 p.m. Grand Entry of powwow dancers at Lone Star Arena and later participate in intertribal dances. Groups are advised to bring snack lunches or plan to purchase lunch at the food court. Vendor stands will also be open.

- Geri Goes In The Center (Oglala Lakota) Pine Ridge, SD, Traditional Lakota stories
- Atka Dancers, Atka, Alaska, Tradition Aleutian dance and song
