Social custom revived as fundraiser
02 March 2010
BISMARCK (UTN) - On Valentines Day 2010 the Strengthening Lifestyles Program had a round dance at the college. It was a winter social and the United Tribes chapter of AIBL put our efforts together and made cakes and beautiful baskets for the dancers.
It is an old tribal custom that families bid on baskets at a social and bought chances to win a cake.

It is an old tribal custom that families bid on baskets at a social and bought chances to win a cake.
The bidding got really interesting with the highest bid at $60 for a basket.
It was nice to see all of the kids bringing their dollars for the cake walks and sharing in one of our winter socials. We were all pleased with the outcome.
I found it nice to see the basket social come back to life as it was a custom much practiced by tribes that held winter socials.
Our heartfelt thanks go out to all who bid on the baskets and walked for cakes and to our advisor, Mr. Terry Moericke, and his wife Linda for their support.
