SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
Under the direct supervision of the Allied Health Department Chair in collaboration with the Vice President of Academic, Career and Technical Education, this position performs all of the duties summarized in this position description. The Instructor/Faculty provides assistance to the MT Program Coordinator and to the Allied Health Department Chair. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Instruct students based upon the curriculum as approved by the Allied Health Department, Medical Transcription Program, Curriculum Development Committee Instructor/Faculty and Vice President of Academics, Career and Technical Education. Instructional methodologies include online/distance education, campus-based, and web technologies.
- Secondary advisor for students. This role is to be taken seriously and enter into advisement relationships with students insofar as these relationships do not interfere with other helping and/or therapeutic relationships that students have on campus.
- Participate in the ongoing improvement initiatives of the Transcription Training Program. Assist in the maintenance of program effectiveness, efficiency, accreditation, and integrity.
- Assist in the activities relating to program budget and overseeing the financial resources are sufficient to provide effectiveness and efficiency.
- The ongoing assessment of at least five program components: student learning outcomes, program effectiveness, faculty development, curriculum, and resource (technology) utilization. Continual evidence of data-driven decisions for the improvement of effectiveness is emphasized.
- Responsible to provide adequate classrooms, laboratories, professional practice settings, and administrative offices for students, staff, and faculty.
- Responsible for maintaining satisfactory records for student admission, attendance, and evaluation.
- Responsible for participating in two advisory board meetings per year.
- Participates in other duties outside the classroom by membership in governance committees, participation in student activities, and advising such activities where appropriate. The College is a community and all its members have responsibilities to that community that go beyond their classroom duties.
- Additional responsibilities are: a) being sensitive to the cultures of the students taught; b) learning about those cultures; and c) integrating material from those cultures as appropriate.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
The Allied Health Department, and its Medical Transcription Program, provides a culturally diverse environment within its otherwise normal and general classroom and office conditions, including online course delivery.
Normal working hours are Monday through Friday, 20-hours each week. A flexible work schedule must be approved by the Allied Health Department Chair and communicated to the Vice President of Academics, Career and Technical Education. The ratio of instructional workload to course development and facilitation must be approved by the Allied Health Department Chair.
This position requires long periods of sitting while working at the desk and on the computer. Must be able to ascend/descend a flight of stairs (50-steps) and occasionally lift items not heavier than 25 pounds.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Accreditation and Certification: The Medical Transcription Instructor must meet the qualifications of the discipline’s approval guidelines set by the Association for Healthcare Documentation and Integrity (AHDI) and the requirements set by North Dakota State Board of Career and Technical Education.
- Credentials: The Instructor/Faculty must hold, by the end of year-one employment, a current and valid Certified Medical Transcriptionists (CMT) credential. Additional health information management credentials are ideal.
- Education: Associates Degree from an accredited Health Information Technology Program or related field. A Bachelor’s Degree in a health information management, related field or education is preferred.
- Experience: The Instructor/Faculty needs to have a minimum of 5-years experience in the health information management industry specific to medical transcription. Prior experience with educating and training is ideal.
- Certification: Needs to have or attain the appropriate status of instructor certification granted by the North Dakota State Board of Vocational and Technical Education.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Academic Advising: Knowledge of the curriculum sufficient to promote optimal learning outcomes.
- Coaching/Motivating: Ability to coach and motivate learners to develop medical transcription skills and competencies mandated by the industry and within the term/dates defined by the institution.
- Written and Oral Communications: Provides regular written and oral feedback to learners sufficient to help them progress in their acquisition of industry skills. Writes reports and other official documents for the Allied Health Department.
- Computer Skills/Technology: Proficient computer skills are required to perform the essential job duties, including but not limited to simulated industry technology, such as speech recognition and dictation queues; Jenzabar EX, JICS/my.UTTC.edu; AHIMA/FORE Virtual Lab or other industry simulated systems and applications.
- Time Management: The ability to manage time while performing multiple tasks at one time is essential for adequate performance of the essential job duties.
- Networking: Knowledge of the industry’s professional associations and hiring companies is critical to maintain the Program’s national recognition and graduate placement directly into industry. Ability to build collaborative working relationships with other UTTC faculty and staff.
- Team Project Management: The ability to manage projects in a team environment is critical to the success of this position.
