The CollegeSTEPS (Creating Supportive and Timely Enrollment Pathways) program is an innovative advising and instruction program funded by the Institute for Higher Education Policy and the Wal-Mart Foundation in collaboration with United Tribes Technical College. The program provides accelerated preparatory education for eligible first-generation, minority student participants. This position is responsible for teaching coursework to the participants as well as providing exemplary student advising services. Additional administrative duties round out the position to support project objectives and Enrollment Management functions.
SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
Under the direct supervision of the Vice President of Academic, Career and Technical Education, performs the following duties for eligible participants in the CollegeSTEPS program (0.75 FTE).
Performs the following duties for Students in the CollegeSTEPS program:
- Instructs students based upon the master course schedule, degree plans, and curricula approved by the Curriculum Committee and the Vice President of Academic, Career & Technical Education in preparatory courses of Reading, English, and/or Math (approximately 6-10 credit hours per semester).
- Provides specialized advising for participants, including assistance with academic and career planning, transition and orientation to the UTTC educational community, course selection and registration, academic coaching and tutoring.
- Develops a thorough understanding of UTTC learn support services and community resources in order to facilitate participant referrals as needed.
- Develops culturally-relevant curricula, lesson plans and other postsecondary coursework materials that achieve student competencies and meet industry workforce standards and utilizes effective learning outcomes assessments to measure participant progress.
- Monitors and reports student attendance and academic progress daily, at mid-terms, and at the end of finals week through the Jenzabar system. Contacts and meets with students with absentee issues.
- Refers students to appropriate academic support and student/campus life services for issues outside of the scope of expertise.
- Actively participates in student learning assessments, student advising, program evaluation, classroom observations, institutional committees, professional development, and other activities required by the institution.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Under the direct supervision of the Retention Coordinator, performs the following duties (0.25 FTE):
- Coordinates a learner assessment center by assisting students with student intake and exit assessments, including the ACT Compass, ACT Discover, Computer literacy testing and other student assessment tools.
- Provides academic advising and course registration services during the Summer semester when UTTC faculty advisors are unavailable.
- Coordinates and/or facilitates training on best practices in student advising.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
None.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
General office & classroom conditions. Normal working hours are from 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. with one hour lunch break. Additional hours may be needed to provide individual tutoring, prepare for classroom presentation, etc. May need to travel to attend workshops/conferences as the need arises.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A bachelor’s degree in education, social science, counseling or related field is required. Master’s degree preferred in education or counseling. Previous experience in teaching or advising is preferred. Additionally, the applicant must have a teaching credential or be qualified to teach preparatory English and reading or preparatory mathematics.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE OR EXPERTISE:
Familiarity with theory and practical application of teaching, advising, and counseling techniques and methods. Effective communication skills, sensitivity to Native American culture and the unique needs of first-generation students.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Familiarity and practical application of counseling techniques and methods. Ability to organize and co-facilitate supportive counseling groups. Conduct individual/personal counseling sessions.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Effective communication skills, sensitivity to Native American culture and disadvantaged students.
- Ability to relate to diverse age groups.
- Ability to communicate with faculty and staff about student characteristics, needs and specialized areas of interest.
- Working knowledge of local support services and referral agencies.
- A demonstrated ability in support of prevention, mediation and advocacy of student concerns.
- Familiarity with substance abuse issues, the family system, career guidance and general counseling issues to include but not limited to: self esteem, social skills, assertiveness, depression and suicide.
